Formed in England’s south-eastern city of Brighton in 2022, BIGHEAD have very quickly gained a well-deserved cult following. With clear influences from artists such as The Cure and The Strokes, BIGHEAD have discovered a way to blend decades of new-wave, post-punk, and grunge music into singular songs. The band’s last release, “Oh, Lover”, perfectly encapsulates their ability to merge raw, intense vocals and lyrics with the energy that draws crowds from countries all over the globe to experience live.

“Oh, Lover” is most definitely not the last fans will be hearing from these alternative rockers, with their newest single “Medola Yard” set to be released on the 19th of June. This song could be a continuation of the group’s more lyrically profound work they have been putting out recently, with the group exclusively telling us to expect a song about “a true story about the passing of time and Britain's normalisation of violence”. A story such as this is something so deeply fitting for a band like BIGHEAD to voice as the new youth representation in England’s music scene. The years of politics and everyday people have been crucial to the genres BIGHEAD have adapted into their own sound, and they are clearly not allowing the messages of those past artists to be forgotten.
In this artist profile, BIGHEAD can be seen in a new lens; not just as a band, but each member and their own visions, coming together to form the well-loved upcoming group. Every member’s personal inspirations and favourite albums are so clearly sonically reflected with the energy of Dave Grohl’s drumming and the experimental outlook of Jonny Greenwood.

As a part of this artist ID, BIGHEAD curated a playlist specifically for us, along with a note elaborating on their song choices:

Oh, Lover - BIGHEAD
Dead End Street - The Kinks
Damaged Goods - Gang of Four
Rule 31 - Radio Free Alice
Stay Away - Nirvana
Elephants - Them Crooked Vultures
Heart in a Cage - The Strokes
Can’t Help Myself - Alexandra Saviour
White Horses - Wolf Alice
Downtown Lover - Lime Garden
The Wahs - Westside Cowboy
Cherry - HIGHDRIVE
(I Don’t Want To Go To) Chelsea - Elvis Costello
catch these fists - Wet Leg
I’m Not Your Dog - Baxter Dury
Used To - Grisly Habit
Defector - Martial Arts
“These songs are a mix of some old classics and newfound ones that have inspired us as a collective. The harsh lyricism of bands like The Kinks is something I take into my own work. There’s also a fair bit in there from our local scene, bands that we are honoured to call friends that deserve a lot more recognition. You should especially check out HIGHDRIVE and Grisly Habit, both bands that are different in sound to each other but truly deserve all praise.”
It won’t be long before BIGHEAD join Wunderhorse, Fontaines D.C. and The Royston Club as some of the biggest bands of the new alternative movement in Europe, and as an audience, there is no pleasure like watching the process unfold in real time.
